Botox patient left with “black eye” after practitioner hits a blood vessel (28 May 2015)

A 58-year-old woman who had Botox before celebrating her silver wedding anniversary and birthday was left with bruising round her eye after the injection punctured a blood vessel.

Business developer Kate Saunders from Northumberland had had Botox previously but went to a new practitioner.

Mrs Saunders was left with a large bruise beneath her eye, which made her look as though she had a black eye.

She was celebrating her birthday as well as going no an anniversary cruise and was hoping to treat forehead wrinkles.

However, she now says she will not be having Botox again. The treatment cost £350 and the day afterwards the bruise began to spread round her eye.

The first Botox injections she had did not take properly and so the practitioner injected more two weeks later when she went for a check up. It was at this appointment that she was warned there might be a small bruise beneath her eye.

“The next day, a purple bruise spread around the whole of my under-eye area to the top of my cheek bone,” she said. “I really looked as though I’d taken a punch.”

Botox works by relaxing the muscles to prevent or improve the appearance of wrinkles – but Botox round the eye area if not used correctly may cause bruising, or the eye itself may even feel “frozen” if Botox is not injected correctly.

Patients have to sign a consent form before having Botox or fillers, but should always check that practitioners are experienced and qualified when having Botox injections or other cosmetic procedures.

Mrs Saunders told the Daily Mail that even with experienced practitioners, there is still a risk of injury:

“I did sign a consent form saying I understood the risks – and anyway nobody could undo what had been done.

“But with any invasive procedures, I now realise there are risks however good the practitioner is – a fact that’s too readily glossed over in pre-treatment consultations.

“Needless to say I wished I’d never had it done, let alone paid hundreds of pounds for the privilege.
“Still, this isn’t permanent and I know that others who have had invasive procedures have suffered a worse and sometimes more permanently disfiguring injury. So I just let it go and regard it as a literally painful lesson.”
