Birmingham City Council announces affordable housing plans (17 March 2014)

Birmingham City Council is set to show its commitment to creating affordable housing in the second city by building hundreds of council houses and procuring maintenance and repair contracts for existing properties under new proposals set to be announced next week.
The council will focus on the Keeping Birmingham Building scheme when it approves the new housing measures at Cabinet on 17 March with 106 new council houses at the forefront of the initiative. The programme, which has been boosted by a grant from the HCA, means over 1000 homes will be under construction this year.
Commissioning, Contracting and Improvement cabinet member for Birmingham City Council, Cllr Stewart Stacey said: “The council's procurement processes in 2013/14 have been extremely efficient. Because of this, we have more funding than expected to plough into building programmes and the local economy.”
The proposals will also lead to over £58 million being used to deliver substantial property improvements to existing council houses. These improvements will include the replacement of boilers and heater systems, roof and door replacements and provision for new bathrooms and kitchens.
BCC Deputy Leader, Cllr Ian Ward concluded: “We own and manage more than 63,000 residential properties, which provide affordable homes for some of our most deprived and vulnerable citizens. We need to invest in our properties in order to make them energy efficient, warm and healthy places in which to live.”
