Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council says anti fly-tipping offensive has seen reduction in waste dumped

Basingstoke and Deane Borough Council says it has seen a “steady fall” in the amount of dumped waste on the street – and more vigilance by borough residents.

The amount of waste fly-tipped fell from 1,725 tonnes in 2013-2014 to 1,106 tonnes for the financial year 2016-2017.

The council said that, over the same period, the team also received an increased number of fly-tipping reports, indicating that members of the public are on the alert in their communities and will no longer tolerate fly-tipping.

The number of reports has risen from 1,694 reports in 2013-2014 to 2,352 reports for 2016-2017. This has led to more responses by the council team to remove fly-tipped items quickly and efficiently.

The team has also been making improvements in the way that they collect data about fly-tipping, ensuring that every incident is properly logged and recorded.

The number of incidents logged has risen from 1,036 in 2015-2016 to 2,147 in 2016-2017.

Cabinet Member for the Environment and Regulatory Services, Councillor Hayley Eachus, said:

“Fly-tipping is illegal and a blight on our landscape – it also has a hugely negative impact on our communities and depletes our resources, so I am really pleased to see the amount of dumped waste steadily decreasing in the borough.

“Residents and members of our wider communities are making a sterling effort in reporting incidents of fly-tipping to the council, allowing the ops team to act swiftly in clearing the waste.

“I want to say thank you to everyone who has taken the time to report these cases – we rely on frequent and direct contact from residents.”

The borough council has been running a “Notice Your Neighbourhood” campaign, encouraging residents to report issues such as fly-tipping, graffiti and abandoned vehicles.

The council says that the new figures also coincide with the Keep Britain Tidy campaign “Your Waste, Your Responsibility” – alerting the public to so-called Facebook fly-tippers, where someone advertises on social media and offers to dispose of waste for a small fee, before dumping the waste.

In these cases, the resident can still be held responsible for not ensuring it has been disposed of correctly. Cllr Eachus added:

“If it seems too good to be true, it probably is – residents have to make sure they get the name and contact details of these people and know where the waste is going.”
