The Prime Minister has said that he wants the anti-corruption summit to be an opportunity for world leaders to commit to global action to “expose, punish and drive out corruption in all walks of life”.

David Cameron is hosting the international anti-corruption summit, with leaders from countries such as Afghanistan, Colombia, Nigeria and Norway attending.

The summit takes place on Thursday 12 May at Lancaster House in London – and will also bring together a coalition of governments, businesses, civil society, law enforcement, sports committees and international organisations, which will commit to taking practical steps to tackle corruption and make it a genuine global priority.

Mr Cameron wants all those attending the summit to sign up to the first ever global declaration against corruption, which would commit them to working together to tackle it – as well as acknowledging that corruption undermines efforts to end poverty, promote prosperity and defeat terrorism and extremism.

Leaders are being asked to pledge to expose corruption wherever it is found –
and pursue and punish those who perpetrate, facilitate or are complicit in corruption.

They will also pledge support to communities who have suffered from corruption – and ensure it does not “fester” in government institutions, businesses and communities.

Campaigners, academics and leading anti-corruption experts will also contribute to a series of live-streamed panel discussions to debate how to build an even more ambitious agenda to support those fighting corruption around the world.

Speaking ahead of the summit, Mr Cameron said:

“Corruption is an enemy of progress and the root of so many of the world’s problems – it destroys jobs and holds back economic growth, traps the poorest in desperate poverty, and undermines our security by pushing people towards extremist groups.

“The battle against corruption will not be won overnight – it will take time, courage and determination to deliver the reforms that are necessary, but we cannot hope to solve the major global challenges we face without tackling the exploitation, fraud and dishonesty at their heart.

“For too long there has been a taboo about tackling this issue head on – the summit will change that. Together we will push the fight against corruption to the top of the international agenda where it belongs.”
