A company organising raft trips for tourists in Peru is being investigated by the authorities in Peru, after a London woman drowned while rafting on the Vilcanota River in Cusco earlier this year.

The Evening Standard newspaper reports that Elisa Ly, 25, from South Croydon was on an adventure holiday with friends in Peru in April, when their inflatable raft capsized, plunging Ms Ly into fast-flowing waters.

The rafting trip has reached steep rapids when the incident happened. Ms Ly and two friends had booked the trip locally with other tourists and were being guided.

Her friends managed to swim to the riverbank, but Ms Ly was left stranded in the water and could not be reached. They ran after her along the riverbank and a guide pursued her down the river on a safety raft.

Rescuers managed to haul Ms Ly from the water – however, despite efforts to save her lasting half-an-hour she could not be resuscitated.

An inquest at Croydon recorded a verdict of accidental death.

Coroner Serena Lynch said:

“This was a terrible end to what should have been a memorable and enjoyable holiday.”

Ms Ly had quit her job as a tax adviser to go travelling.

A local investigation has been launched into the rafting company in Peru, after safety concerns were raised.
