A new system for selecting skilled migrants by Australia is being launched by the Australian government (27 June 2012)

Duncan Lewis, Legal News Solicitors, A new system for selecting skilled migrants by Australia is being launched by the Australian government

According to a Paul Arthur Director UK migration specialist the new rules by the Australian government which relaxes the entry of skilled labour into Australia would see one of the biggest recruitment drives for skilled migrants for 30 years.

The Australian government has relaxed its points system for skilled migrants, in the face of a labour shortage and a booming economy.

The new points based system to be introduced by the Australia’s Department of Migration and Citizenship on July 1 would be more towards sponsorship based migration and will not be as restrictive as was feared originally. There is supposed to be a Skill Select scheme for skilled migrants who have not been sponsored.

The points which would be required to pass for migration under the scheme have been reduced from 65 to 60.
Mr Arthur said that under the SkillSelect scheme, would-be migrants without an employer sponsor first have to provide an Expression of Interest in order to be points graded, and those scoring the most points were then allowed to apply for a visa.
The new system makes the job of the Australian government easier to match would-be migrants more easily with the number of jobs available.
At present with the economy booming in Australia the authorities have cut the point’s requirement in a drive to recruit skilled migrants. But in case Australian economy and the labour market take a turn for the worse in future, then the authorities can raise the point’s requirement to discourage applications.
The system also allows individual states to sponsor migrants whose skills are in particular demand, for example Western Australia currently needs mining engineers.
Mr Arthur has advised would be migrants to use registered migration agents to handle their applications as this can often save time wasted time and money with an application that fails.
It has been also advised that those British migrants seeking long term migration to Australia should make sure they save enough for a decent retirement, as they will lose the rights to index linking on their UK state pension if they settle in Australia. The state pension is frozen from the time of arrival, or the time of retirement. Some 250,000 migrants have been affected.
