Government Housing Minister Brandon Lewis has announced that more than 1,000 new homes are to be built across London for the private rental sector.

Social housing published 24Dash reports that the private sector rental properties will be built in some of London’s most sought-after locations – including the newest neighbourhood in Stratford’s Olympic Village site.

Mr Lewis announced the project at the London Real Estate Forum and said the completion of three deals would provide good quality, rented homes for tenants “well into the future”.

A total of £252 million will be invested in building 1,353 homes for rent across key sites in London – including 903 homes at Stratford’s Olympic Village, 278 at Newington Butts in Southwark and 172 across sites in Hammersmith, Westminster and West Kensington. Each site will include a mix of one, two and three-bedroom properties, all located close to underground stations.

Mr Lewis said that work on the homes will begin immediately, and will be completed in 2017 and 2018.

“As a global city, with excellent opportunities and links to the rest of the world, there is clear demand to provide people with the flexible option of renting in London,” Mr Lewis said.

“These three deals will deliver 1,353 new homes specifically for private rent in some of the capital’s most sought-after locations, meeting the needs of tenants well into the future.”
