Aina Khan presents paper on Legal pluralism and marriage at Mumbai conference (21 December 2015)

Head of Duncan Lewis Islamic Law Department and Family Law Solicitor Aina Khan presented a paper on 'Legal pluralism and marriage' addressing the topic of unregistered marriages and outlining her ROM 'Register Our Marriage' Campaign at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay.
Aina Khan delivered her paper at the International Conference of the Commission on Legal Pluralism in collaboration with the Department of Humanities and Social Sciences which took place at the Victor Menezes Convention Centre (VMCC), Indian Institute of Technology Bombay on the 14-16 December 2015 Mumbai, India.
Aina said:
"It was an honour to take part in this prestigious conference, which brought together academics from around the globe. It was particularly fascinating to debate the parallels and contrasts with unregistered religious marriages in South Africa, where the government is currently being challenged in court on this topic. I am planning to take my own clients' cases to the Supreme Court in England and to the European Court of Human Rights and am following the international debate closely".
Aina’s paper at the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay highlighted the main concerns addressed by her Register Our Marriage (ROM) campaign, which is designed to inform individuals of the importance of registering religious marriages conducted in the UK. As a consequence of failing to register marriages, many couples are left with no legal rights upon divorce or to inheritance and pension rights.
