Duncan Lewis, Islamic Law Solicitors, Aina Khan and Baroness Cox discuss Sharia Councils and Muslim women seeking divorce settlements on BBC Radio 4

Head of Duncan Lewis Islamic Law Department Aina Khan featured as a guest alongside Baroness Cox on BBC Radio 4 on 27/04/2014 to discuss “why Sharia Councils are allegedly unfairly treating Muslim women seeking divorce settlements”.

Aina Khan featured on the BBC Radio 4 program which aired on Sunday 27th April alongside Baroness Cox to discuss why Sharia Councils are allegedly unfairly treating Muslim women seeking divorce settlements”, following the launch of the group Sharia Watch UK on 24th April 2014.

?The group claims it will be monitoring the activities of Sharia Councils across the country, reflecting “concerns of how Muslim Women are being treated in Divorce cases and Inheritance Disputes”. Aina Khan and Baroness Cox were invited as guests on the radio program to discuss the group and the issues that it is claiming to monitor.

Baroness Cox voiced her concern about “developments in the country happening in the name of Sharia”, stating that “Sharia Councils practise discriminatory laws towards women” surrounding the issue of “equality” in divorce, inheritance, child care - and that the way these issues are dealt with is “against the principles of (the UK) and (its) commitment to eradicate gender discrimination”.

Aina responded by stating that she did not believe that these were inherent problems in Sharia Law, rather “the way that it is practised in certain cultures” and that if the UK were to “introduce this wholesale” then perhaps there is real cause for concern”.

Aina followed by stating that “I’m a practicing lawyer working under English law. I would not be applying Sharia Solutions for Muslim clients if they were not to the benefit of the client and if they did not work under English Law. Where Sharia councils are working towards best practice and want to listen to criticisms from Practitioners like myself, who apply such solutions every day, I would like to work with those Councils. I am pleased to report that this partnership is working very well”.
