Duncan Lewis’ has taken the first steps in challenging the conditions of detainees at the controversial Manston centre on behalf of a charity and an asylum seeker.
A pre-action letter issued on behalf of the clients argues that the woman was unlawfully detained in ‘egregiously defective conditions’.
The action has received widespread coverage following the emergence of the controversy over the asylum-processing centre in Kent, which has been housing up to 3,000 people in a centre designed for up to 1,800.
The charity Detention Action is supporting the woman, who is a non-European national, in her legal claim against the Home Secretary Suella Braverman.
