Duncan Lewis’ Ian Hurst has been featured in a recent ‘This is Money’ article shedding light on a mistake some employers have been making in relation to maternity leave and pension contributions.
It has emerged that some women on maternity leave may be owed significant pension contributions from their employers.
Employers are required to maintain pension contributions based on the employee's full salary during maternity leave, even if the employee's pay is reduced during this period. However, advocacy group Nugget Savings has reported that over 200 women have experienced reduced employer contributions based on their maternity pay rather than their pre-maternity salary. The extent of this issue across the workforce remains uncertain.
The advocacy group stated that some of their community have been able to reclaim the money from their employer, yet others have been refused repayments, despite them being within their rights.
Our employment solicitor provided expert advice in the tips he shared with This is Money. The tips are for anyone concerned they may be affected by the pension contribution miscalculations during maternity leave.
