A High Court compensation challenge on behalf of 82-year-old Windrush scandal victim left unable to work or claim benefits for 34 years featured in the Independent.

Duncan Lewis is leading the case against the Home Office over its failure to compensate Surjit Kaur for decades of lost work and benefits. If successful, the case could lead to hundreds of other victims having their claims reassessed.

Ms Kaur arrived in the UK from India in 1963, aged 22, but was forced into a life of poverty by Government failings, which also left her unable to demonstrate she was lawfully in the UK.

Public law solicitor Jeremy Bloom said: “At 82 years old, Ms Kaur has shown courage and determination to hold the Home Office to account. She is the first individual to have a challenge to decisions under the Windrush compensation scheme heard in the High Court and judgment in her case may well benefit countless others who have accepted awards which don’t properly reflect their losses, or who have yet to make a claim under the scheme.”

The High Court judgment is pending.
