Profile / Experience

I am a Solicitor in the Public Law and Immigration Department at Duncan Lewis.

I act for both privately funded and publicly funded (legal aid) clients that require advice and assistance across a broad spectrum of asylum, immigration, EU, human rights and nationality matters. I have significant experience dealing with vulnerable clients including those in detention, those suffering from complex psychological issues and victims of torture and trafficking. I have a particular specialism in challenging the detention of vulnerable clients, by way of judicial review to the High Court, and have achieved success securing their release from detention. I regularly represent clients at the First and Upper Tier Tribunal of the Immigration Asylum Chamber in immigration appeals and immigration bail hearings.

I am accredited by the Law Society as a Senior Caseworker (Level 2) of the Immigration & Asylum Accreditation Scheme, this means I have demonstrated the required level of expertise and experience in this area of law as defined by the Law Society.

  • Postgraduate Diploma in Legal Practice (LPC)- Nottingham Trent University
  • LLB (Hons) - De Montfort University

  • "Heather is a pleasure to work with. She has excellent communication skills, and is friendly and responsive. Working (preparing a country expert report) on a case with her was very gratifying. Her instructions were clear, incisive and relevant, and she would answer any queries immediately, and provide whatever help (for example in obtaining information from her client) I needed. She won her case for her client, and thoughtfully provided me with feedback on the report from the judge, which was considerate and appreciated. I look forward to being able to work with her again in the future." - Karen O'Reilly, Country Expert

  • "I worked with Heather in a judicial review claim in the High Court seeking urgent interim relief for a victim of trafficking. Heather obtained two high quality witness statements in a very short space of time which were crucial to the success of the application. Heather clearly has a gift for empathising with vulnerable clients, which enables her to assist them in producing their best evidence (an important skill in legally aided immigration work)." - Zoe McCallum, Matrix Chambers

  • "I have worked with Heather on a number of immigration detention cases involving human trafficking. Heather is an extremely thorough lawyer who pulls all the stops out to make a case as strong as it can be. I was recently involved in a complicated and problematic detention claim involving a victim of human trafficking, where there were numerous factual and legal obstacles. Heather was very dedicated in meticulously addressing the factual issues with the lay client. Her legal work is also very thorough and she identified a number of legal issues which formed the backbone of the case, which were not at all obvious." - Anthony Vaughn, Garden Court Chambers
