Chartered Institute of Public Finance And Accountancy

Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy

What is the Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA)?

The Chartered Institute of Public Finance & Accountancy (CIPFA) is a professional body who regulates the world of finance to ensure that public money is managed in all organisations that interact with them. The registration is made up of different public sector workers within the financial industry. The CIPFA works to support these individuals and maintain respect for the industry, whilst protecting the public’s interest against those who would abuse their power.

As part of their service, the CIPFA it promotes education and training, in the form of accredited course, e-learning platforms and its own in-house training, devised to educate finance professionals in the moderated standard upheld by the CIPFA.

The CIPFA assists in setting the international standard for finance and accounting, through the International Public Sector Accounting Standards Board (IPSASB) and the Financial Reporting Advisory Board to the Treasury (FRAB).

What can the CIPFA do if there is an allegation of wrong-doing?

The CIPFA asks that all registrants uphold the Code of Practice that the profession requires, which is laid out in the Standards of Professional Practice (SoPP). The CIPFA also details the SoPP on Ethics which set out the behaviour and values they insist registrants adhere to. These include:

  • Be objective in your service;
  • Ensuring confidentiality is preserved;
  • Having integrity for your work;
  • Maintaining a professional composure; and
  • Using professional competence and care in all that you do.

It is important to note that these guidelines were updated in July 2017, meaning that any new policies may be difficult to comprehend. Duncan Lewis Regulatory Fitness to Practice solicitors are well versed in the CIPFA’s Standards of Professional Practice, so we can advise you on any query you may have in regards to their regulatory service.

The CIPFA follows Disciplinary Regulations when dealing with a fitness to practice complaint, making sure any challenge against a registrant is properly investigated and resolved, whether it leads to a hearing resulting in a sanction, or a dismissal of the claim.

How Can Duncan Lewis help me if the CIPFA bring proceedings against me?
