Profile / Experience

I joined Duncan Lewis Solicitors in March 2016 as a Caseworker and went on to successfully complete my training contract within the Immigration and Public Law department at the firm's Birmingham office. I qualified in March 2019 and now practice as a Supervising Solicitor in the Private and Business Immigration department in the Birmingham office.

I began my legal career handling private immigration matters, whereby I built up a great deal of experience and established extensive rapport with clients, in particular those who are vulnerable, and leading counsels. I fully appreciate that each client’s matter is case sensitive and I am versatile in nature and can adapt to circumstances of any given manner whilst maintaining standards of professionalism and integrity. I have always been committed to going the extra mile for my clients.

I have significant experience dealing with vulnerable clients including those in detention, those suffering from complex psychological issues, and victims of both torture and trafficking. I have a particular specialism in challenging the detention of vulnerable clients and have achieved success securing their release and awards of damages for the client. I am accredited as a Senior Caseworker under the Law Society’s Immigration and Asylum Accreditation Scheme as a Level 2 Senior Caseworker which demonstrates my skill and expertise in this area of law.

My caseload consists of, but is not limited to the following:
  • Asylum applications;
  • Fresh claims
  • Points Based System (PBS), advising high-net-worth and skilled individuals on extension of their visa;
  • Tier 1 applications;
  • Applications for leave to enter or further leave to remain as a spouse, fiancé, unmarried partner or other dependant relative;
  • Adult dependants;
  • Entry clearance;
  • Visitor visas;
  • EEA matters;
  • Human Rights applications;
  • Bail applications;
  • Nationality: applications for citizenship under any route;
  • Immigration appeals;
  • Deportation;
  • Passport applications; and
  • Sponsorships, affidavits and Power of Attorneys.
In addition, I have extensive experience in a wide range of Judicial Review claimant challenges, particularly those that are immigration, civil liberties and asylum-related. This has included cases of:
  • Unlawful detention;
  • Dublin III/Third Country removal;
  • Challenging the Competent Authority;
  • Unlawful delay in processing immigration and asylum applications;
  • Fresh claim challenges/unlawful denial of appeal rights; and
  • Challenges to refusals of Article 8 ECHR family and private life applications.
I am multilingual and fluent in Punjabi, Hindi, Urdu and Mirpuri.

I was kept well informed throughout the process, used empathetic approach to dealing with my sensitive and difficult immigration case, listened to my concerns, planned for the best course of action and gave me the confidence to go through this long and difficult process. • "This is to thanks the whole team of Duncan Lewis in general and particularly to solicitor Amrit for the great work he has done for my successful asylum case...I entered Duncan Lewis solicitor when I seek asylum in 2016. As my case has been refused by the Home Office the machine of Duncan Lewis solicitor did work deeply on the file when I didn't know what to do and how it's going to be. I started being worried because for me I would have loved seeing catching up with my solicitor every day as I taught it was the way to take the case serious. It was not as such however something, a big job was being done on my behalf. When it had to come for a meeting with them I always discovered that something new was done to support my case. How not only friendly they are but also good listener which is a good example to copy and the privilege is going to be all mine to join the wonderful team. To be short it didn't last long after the tribunal hearing where l saw the barrister defending deeply and is by step the case before the judge who started only writing what he was saying. I am also giving thanks to him for his commitment on my case. In conclusion and as a witness this is to recommend to all those who are in the process of asylum to make sure being in touch with Duncan Lewis solicitor and the rest will be done." - Client, François (May 2019)

  • "Fantastic outcome for both my boys in their asylum claims! Thank you so much to Amrit Singh for making the process relatively painless, for explaining everything so well and ensuring everything was done thoroughly. The boys now have a future they deserve." - Warwickshire Council (July 2019)
