I am a Consultant Solicitor with Duncan Lewis and I am the head of the company’s Islamic Family Law Department, leading a team of experienced solicitors providing innovative solutions under English law.
I have been awarded an OBE by Her Majesty the Queen in the New Year’s Honours List 2018 for ‘services to the protection of women and children in unregistered marriages’. My work was illustrated in the November 2017 Channel 4 Dispatches documentary ‘The Truth About Muslim Marriage’ in which I discussed my campaign ‘Register Our Marriage’ www.registerourmarriage.org. This lobbies for reform of the Marriage Act 1949 to require all faith marriages to be legally registered. The Government now backs this campaign.
I have been recommended by the Legal 500 Legal Directory for my matrimonial work.
I am an experienced advocate and I handle many of my own cases at court. I have over 25 years’ experience in handling the following types of matters;
- Divorce and Financial settlements
- Children’s arrangements – in particular Parental Alienation of one parent
- Cohabitation disputes
- Child law – including contested residence and contact, care cases and child protection
- International Family law & Jurisdiction disputes
- Family Businesses & Trusts
- Parental Relocation
- Prenuptial, Postnuptial & Separation agreements
- Domestic Violence, Forced Marriages & Nullity
I have developed a niche specialism in Islamic Family law over 20 years, providing pioneering solutions which work under English as well as Sharia law. I personally handle the highly charged negotiations and issues arising from these challenging court cases. Many of these cases frequently involve couples who have had only an Islamic marriage and therefore are not legally married under English law and do not have matrimonial rights. I also assist with women seeking an Islamic divorce to which their husband does not consent and women wishing to recover their 'Mehr' (Islamic marital finance settlement) under English law. In addition, I have considerable experience dealing with dowry and wedding jewellery disputes and I aid couples who wish to have tailor made Islamic marriage contracts and prenuptials. I provide expert opinions for court, other solicitors and Social Services on complex issues such as validity of marriages and divorces, and the logistics of placing children abroad in Muslim countries.
My clients are professionals, business owners and expats in the UK and abroad, whom I advise on Skype & Webcam when they cannot attend meetings in person. I have an extensive network of thousands of legal and other professionals across the UK and in 40+ countries, who help me provide a holistic service, they include; Mediators & Arbitrators, marriage guidance counsellors, financial advisors and wealth managers.
I am frequently invited to appear on TV, radio and the press in the UK and abroad, and have contributed to numerous media outlets including; BBC TV, BBC Radio 4 Women's Hour, Channel 4, The Times and The Guardian. I have had articles appear in the press in both the USA and across Europe and I am BBC Asian Network's resident Family Guru.
I speak Urdu, Hindi, and French, both read and write Arabic, and understand Punjabi
