Mental health charity Rethink Mental Illness has been re-commissioned by Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group and Wiltshire Council to support vulnerable people through crises and help them live independently.

The services will be re-commissioned from 16 April to support and empower individuals to ensure their rights are protected and their voices are heard, says the council.

The service swill also ensure mental health patients can access the information and services they need in order to improve their own health and wellbeing, says Wiltshire Council.

The project will also see the mental health charity deliver independent advocacy services for people living with mental health needs in the Wiltshire area.

Wiltshire Council cabinet member for public health, Keith Humphries, said:

”The type of support Rethink provide will allow people to maintain their independence – and to make decisions about their own lives, safe in the knowledge that this service is on hand to advise, inform and support them as much as they need.”

CEO of Rethink Mental Illness, Mark Winstanley, added:

"We are delighted to be building on our already great work in Wiltshire – and supporting vulnerable people through this project, so that they can get their voices heard and access the support they need.

“At Rethink Mental Illness, we know it is vital that people living with mental illness and their carers have access to the right support, provision and information at the right time.”

Associate Director of Commissioning (Mental Health, Dementia and Learning Disabilities, Wiltshire Clinical Commissioning Group, Barbara Smith, said:

“Independent mental health advocacy is a vital service for vulnerable people, providing them with the information and support they need to make informed, confident decisions about their own health and social needs.

“Wiltshire CCG is pleased to be working with Wiltshire Council and Rethink to ensure that the residents of Wiltshire continue to receive a high quality advocacy service.”

Wiltshire Council corporate director, Maggie Rae, said the council was pleased to be working with their partners to provide “this much-needed service”.

“We hope that it will be comforting for anyone living with mental health needs that they're not on their own – and Rethink will be there alongside them providing high quality support,” she added.
