The Royal Borough of Greenwich in southeast London hosted a free event to mark Dementia Awareness Week.

Dementia Awareness Week runs from 15 to 19 May and the free event is part of the council’s and its partners' on going efforts to support people with dementia and make everyday life easier by becoming a “dementia-friendly borough”.

To this end, businesses in Greenwich are being offered advice on how to make their service better for people with dementia by improving layouts, signage and access, along with free training for staff.

Once a business is judged to be dementia friendly, it will receive a dementia aware sticker to display in its window, to help people with dementia and their friends and family find a recommended place to shop, eat or drink.

Greenwich Borough Council’s Cabinet Member for Health and Adult Social Care, Councillor David Gardner, said:

“We understand that living with dementia is often difficult and so we are working hard to improve the quality of life for residents with dementia by creating a more inclusive borough for all.

“Our free event will help raise awareness of the condition in a comfortable environment – and give a chance to ask questions, find out what support is available or simply take part in some fun activities.”

More than 2,000 people in the borough are estimated to be living with dementia, with more than 100 people under the age of 65 estimated to have young onset dementia.

The Greenwich Community Directory was recently updated to provide additional assistance to people with dementia and their family, friends and carers.

The dedicated page offers advice for people with dementia, their friends and family, professionals and businesses.

Greenwich Borough Council will host its Dementia Awareness Week event with from 1.30pm to 5pm at The Stables, 76 Hornfair Road in Charlton, southeast London, where there will be information stalls, activities and drop in workshops.

The council said that highlights would two Dementia Friends sessions run by the Alzheimer's Society.
