Duncan Lewis, Mental Health Solicitors, Record numbers of children are contacting the NSPCC about suicidal thoughts

According to the NSPCC’s Childline, children as young as 8 years old have contacted the Charity seeking help with anxiety. In fact the number of young people reaching out for help has increased sharply.

In 2015-2016 the Childline counselled 11,706 children for anxiety. According to the Charity issues raised varied from personal problems to Brexit and the US election. It appears that girls in particular are struggling with the demands of the modern world; social media placing pressure on them to attain a ‘perfect life’. One young girl describes her struggles with depression and anxiety. She talks about the importance of breaking down the stigma associated with mental illness by talking to others about how we feel.

Peter Wanless (Chief Exec of NSPCC) said; “It is only natural for children and young people to feel worried sometimes, but when they are plagued by constant fears that are resulting in panic attacks and making them not want to leave the house then they need support.”

The NSPCC has said it has referred many callers to the emergency services, adding a lack of support was leading children to reach crisis point. Peter Wanless comments that “as a society, we cannot be content that a generation of children feel so worthless, alone and cut off from support.”

Director of Mental Health at Duncan Lewis Rachel Caswell comments that;“ If you are a family member of an adolescent/child suffering any mental health difficulties or indeed you yourself are a teenager experiencing MH problems, we are keen to help in whatever way we can. We can put you in contact with a charity who can help if there is no specific legal issue we can assist with. If you have been detained under the MHA 1983 (as amended by 2007 Act) we can assist in providing legal advice.”
