Duncan Lewis, Mental Health Solicitors, NHS England appeals for opinions on mental health services for Armed Forces veterans

NHS England has launched a consultation on mental health services run for veterans.

The contracts for most of the services are due to end in September 2016 –and NHS England says this is a chance for serving and former Armed Forces personnel to give their opinion.

The services started in 2010 after publication of Fighting Fit: a mental health plan for servicemen and veterans – a report by former Surgeon-Commander, Dr Andrew Murrison MP.

The report identified where the NHS needs to give extra support to veterans – the health service provides 12 mental health services across England specifically for veterans, with specialist staff to care for veterans with mental health needs, including directing them to the most appropriate service.

The NHS wants to hear from anyone who has opinions to offer, especially from those who have served in the Armed Forces (whether as a reservist or regular) and have used or are currently using NHS veterans’ mental health services.

The consultation is also inviting the opinions of family members and carers, as well as staff and organisations providing mental health care, treatment and support for veterans and their families.

The health service also wishes to hear from veterans with mental health difficulties who have not sought or received support and treatment.

The survey will run until 31 March 2016 and can be completed at NHS England – or by writing to Freepost VETERANS' MENTAL HEALTH with any opinions.
