Hartlepool Council has announced it will be holding a free event to mark World Mental Health Day on Monday (10/10/16).

World Mental Health Day is observed on 10 October every year, with a different theme each year. The theme for 2016 is “psychological first aid”, which covers both psychological and social support.

The World Health Organization (WHO) says investment in psychological first aid is part of a longer-term effort to ensure that anyone in acute distress due to a crisis is able to receive basic support – and that those who need more than psychological first aid will receive additional advanced support from health, mental health and social services.

In Hartlepool, the event at Hartlepool Borough Hall between 1pm and 4pm – called Strictly Mental Health – will give members of the public the opportunity to talk to staff and volunteers from the many support services operating in the town.

Chair of Hartlepool Borough Council’s Adult Services Committee, Councillor Stephen Thomas, said:

“This free event is ideal for anyone wanting to talk to someone or needing support for a family member or friend.

“One in four of us will experience some kind of mental health problem at some time in our life – and there are lots of organisations in Hartlepool that can offer free and confidential support.”
