Duncan Lewis, Mental Health Solicitors, Council prepares for mental health national campaign day

St Helens Council is supporting the national campaign day for mental health on Thursday 4 February – and will encourage residents to join the nation in talking about mental health to help end the misconceptions around it.

As part of the local campaign to highlight mental health issues, Wirral residents are being asked to have simple conversations about mental health with family, friends or colleagues – and to log their conversations on an interactive map by emailing timetotalk@sthelens.gov.uk.

The campaign will help build a local picture, says the council. The St Helens Council’s Healthy Living Team is leading the campaign and has set a goal of 20,000 minutes of mental health conversations. The initial target of 10,000 minutes was achieved within just six weeks – and the current total of conversations about mental health to date stands at 20,245 minutes.

The campaign report highlighting the local success is available from the Healthy Living Team website at www.healthysthelens.co.uk, where residents can also find out about a range of healthy lifestyle services and handy tips for starting their conversations.

The national Time to Talk Day is organised by Time to Change. The England-wide campaign aims to dispel discrimination and stigmas related to mental health problems and is the largest project of its kind in England.

The campaign is led by mental health charities Mind and Rethink Mental Illness.

Wirral Council’s Cabinet Member for Public Health and Wellbeing, Councillor Jeanie Bell, said:

“Research shows that one in four people nationally will experience mental health issues in the course of a year – and many are reluctant to be vocal about them, so it’s certainly something that we as a community need to be proactive about.

“Talking about mental health is the best way to help – by simply having a simple conversation with family, with friends, with whomever, we can begin to eliminate the stigma that often stifles and isolates people experiencing mental distress.

“We’ve seen such a great response from the community so far – and I’m sure many more residents will join us for the national Time to Talk Day on 4 February.”
