Barnet Council in London has announced that all of Barnet’s ten children’s centres have now been awarded a Healthy Children’s Centre special health status, to recognise their work in helping to improve the health of children and families in Barnet.

The Healthy Children’s Centre Programme aims to improve the health outcomes of children and their parents – from pregnancy through the first five years of life.

The Healthy Children’s Centre status specifically recognises that the centres help improve the overall health and wellbeing of the community, in line with Barnet’s six key health priorities – encouraging healthy eating and exercise, improving the oral health of children, improving the emotional wellbeing of residents, reducing alcohol and substance misuse, encouraging smoke-free households and increasing childhood immunisations.

Chair of the Children, Education, Libraries & Safeguarding Committee, Councillor Reuben Thompstone, said:

“I want to congratulate the children centres involved for their hard work – and for helping to make Barnet a healthier place, where people are educated on the importance of health and wellbeing.

“Over the last few years in particular, our children’s centres have prioritised giving their staff increased training opportunities and knowledge of the health status of their families.

“This in turn helps residents to understand the importance of health and wellbeing – and now we are really starting to see the benefits of this approach.

“Our centres are now able to deliver important and innovative services that offer breast feeding advice, oral health demonstrations and healthy eating recommendations – which is of great benefit to Barnet residents and communities.”
