A former parliamentary aide who was suspected of spying has won the right to stay in the UK, following convincing a hearing that she was not liaising with spies in Moscow. Twenty-six-year-old Katia Zatuliveter was ordered to attend a hearing of the Special Immigration Appeals Commission (Siac), where she had to argue that she had not been communicating with Russian spies while in employment for Defence Select Committee member, MP Mike Hancock, with whom she had been in a relationship. Ms. Zatuliveter was not allowed to be present at a large part of the hearing but managed to convince the panel that she did not pose a threat to UK national security. The Home Office have described the ruling as disappointing.
A Home Office spokesperson reiterated that they would take all the necessary actions to protect the public from those who they believe to pose a danger to national security. She added that the court had ruled that ample grounds existed for the suspicion. The spokesperson said that the Home Office believed in their decision to pursue the deportation of Ms. Zatuliveter based on national security.
