A head teacher dismissed for gross misconduct claims unfair dismissal (7 December 2012)

A former head teacher has claimed unfair dismissal after he had been accused of nine allegations of gross misconduct relating to financial negligence and missing schools to watch football matches.
Alan King was the head teacher for Furness Primary School, Furness Road, Harlesden, when he was dismissed in October last year after being suspended in January the same year.
He lodged a claim against the Brent Council which was to be heard at Watford Employment Tribunal on Tuesday.
Mr King, who has worked as a teacher in the borough since 1978, ran up bills of up to £2million for photocopiers and computer equipment from supply company LTM, which then later became COS, despite receiving warnings from Brent Council.
Mr King had met with David Sawyer of LTM after Sabina Nettie, head teacher of Princess Frederica, had done so in 2003, and took out a number of leases for photocopiers the tribunal heard.
The employment law lawyer representing the respondents said that Mr King had made deals for large amounts of money.
He added that Mr King had misused contracts worth £2m, in between January 2007 to July 2010. Six of those contracts were still working and was going to cost £1.4m if they are allowed to run their course. Bailiffs presented themselves at the school trying to get their money back.”
