As a barrister and law trainer, Mavelyn has extensive experience in: advocacy, particularly in complex cases for the High Court and the Court of Appeal as well as teaching Law from A level to postgraduate courses; management and supervision of assistant solicitors, trainee solicitors, and administrative staff; advising for immigration, criminal, general civil and employment law; drafting legal documents (e.g. witness statements, skeleton arguments) and drafting training materials; negotiating with public agencies (e.g., the Home Office, Police, NHS); legal researching; and verbal communication with wide a range of groups.

Mavelyn is a specialist in immigration and asylum law and has presented hundreds of immigration appeals and has achieved a high degree of success in those appeals.

Her experience is illustrated by her Level 3 IAAS accreditation as an Advanced Caseworker under the Law Society scheme.

As an employed counsel for Duncan Lewis she has achieved a high success rate at immigration appeals, including high profile cases like Aso Ibrahim and has a high success rate at judicial review applications and hearings in the Administrative Court and the Court of Appeal. see: Demirkaya v. Secretary of State for Home Department [2010] where permission to appeal was granted by the Court of Appeal. Mavelyn has trained many members of staff who have gone on to pass the Law Society Immigration and Asylum Accreditation scheme.

Recently, Mavelyn was involved in a test case before the Court of Appeal JD (Democratic Republic of Congo) v. Secretary of State for the Home Department and judgment has been given (16 March 2012) when her client 's application for permission was granted. The case is now reported: [2012] EWCA Civ 327.
