The multimillionaire founder of online fashion retailer ASOS could be heading for one of the UK’s most costly divorce cases after separating from his wife.
Nick Robertson, 46 – listed at 298 on The Sunday Times Rich List – has reportedly left the family home in Wimbledon, south London to live apart from his wife Janine, 41, and their two young daughters.
The Daily Mail reports that Mr Robertson’s personal wealth has increased sharply this year to an estimated fortune of £500 million.
Mr Robertson has been married to his wife for 10 years – the couple met on a blind date arranged by a friend of Mrs Robertson who was a colleague of Mr Robertson at ASOS.
Mr Robertson is the great grandson of clothing pioneer Austin Reed. The ASOS brand is worth £5.8bn worldwide and Mr Robertson has a 9.4% stake in the company.
As Mr Robertson and his wife have been married for 10 years and their young children are aged just five and six, Mrs Robertson could be eligible for a large share of her husband’s fortune should they divorce.
The Daily Mail reports that in 2013 the share value of ASOS rocketed – giving Mr Robertson a £536m stake in the company with the likelihood he will rise up The Sunday Times Rich List again this year. Last year his income was estimated at £5.8m, which rose again after he sold £79m of his ASOS shares.
Any suggestion that Mr Robertson may have to sell more of his shares to pay his wife in any divorce settlement could impact on the company financially.
However, a spokesman for the couple said that although they were living apart, Mr and Mrs Robertson were “not talking about divorce”.
