A chartered surveyor who “lost his rag” and launched a vicious assault on his frail 92-year-old mother has been spared jail, the Daily Mail reports.

Timothy Norris-Jones, 59, had told police that his elderly mother had sustained bruises to her face and a cut hand after he tried to catch her as she accidentally fell at home.

However, Mr Norris-Jones had previously attacked his mother on two occasions and a court at Guildford in Surrey handed him a suspended sentence and a restraining order banning him from spending any time alone with his mother for the rest of her life, and also banning him from visiting her home in Guildford.

The truth about Mr Norris-Jones’s assault on his mother was discovered after her live-in carer returned home and called the police.

Mr Norris-Jones’s mother later told police officers that her son “just blew up”.

“He was pushing my face and holding my wrists,” she said.

“I can remember I said, ‘Stop this Tim, don't do it.’"

Norris-Jones had told police officers he had accidentally caught his mother’s face as he had tried to stop her from falling.

The attack in November 2014 was branded “horrific” by Judge Noel Lucas, who told Norris-Jones:

“You gave your mother a systematic beating.

”I hope you are thoroughly ashamed of yourself.”

Norris Jones’s defence lawyer told Guildford Crown Court that the mother loved her son, despite his assault on her – and was concerned for him.

“One of the reasons this is not only sad – but a difficult case – is that we can't confidently say why this happened.

“The defendant is unable to explain what triggered this or the previous assaults,” the court was told.

A forensic psychologist said that Norris-Jones – from Haddenham in Buckinghamshire – was “emotionally damaged” and looked to his mother for support. When she was unable to supply this, he had “lost his rag”.

In court, Norris-Jones admitted two counts of ABH and was cleared of one count of GBH.

The court handed him a 20-month jail sentence, suspended for two years – and he will be required to wear an electronic ankle bracelet (tag), enforcing a strict 12-month curfew.

Norris-Jones was also ordered to pay £500 in costs.

Judge Lucas told Norris-Jones:

“If I had taken the view that your actions were anything other than those of an
ill and weak man, I would now be sending you to prison for a substantial amount of time.”
