Police start fighting domestic abuse (30 January 2014)

Duncan Lewis, Family Solicitors, Police start fighting domestic abuse

Although there is no reliable data on the prevalence of domestic crime in the UK we do know that it is a huge problem. One in three women will be the subject of domestic violence at some point during their adult lives.

Big Wing

A police operation that saw more than 4,500 police officers mobilise to raid homes across London where domestic violence had been reported or was suspected, was conducted called Big Wing. In some boroughs of London domestic violence has increased by 15 per cent, and the increase for all of London is nine per cent.

An Evening Standard reporter followed police on a visit to the home of a woman who had reported that her partner had slapped her. Another raid was on the home of a stalker who had been pursuing his victim for 21 years, even though their relationship only lasted a few weeks.

London’s Metropolitan Police are now using policing techniques more commonly associated with catching robbers and burglars to gather evidence of domestic violence.

Commander Jones said: “Domestic abuse is not restricted to any socio-economic group, any particular age. We now record offending for 16 year olds and above as domestic violence.”
It is thought that more victims of domestic abuse are coming forward to report crimes because of an increase in confidence that their report may result in action. Many victims of domestic abuse do not understand how domestic violence solicitors can help resolve problems and build cases against violent partners.

Police are also focusing on known dangerous and prolific domestic abuse offenders. Commander Jones said: “Today’s action is a clear statement from the Met that we will not tolerate domestic abuse and will not allow it to remain hidden.”

Domestic abuse facts and figures

The charity Women’s Aid reported that 1.2 million women and 800,000 men reported domestic abuse between 2011 and 2012. Domestic violence is a major cause of early death in the home.
According to World Health Organisation data, violence, which includes domestic violence, kills more people every year than war, AIDS or drowning. Domestic violence accounts for around 25 per cent of all violence.

In recent years there has been an increase in the number of cases of domestic violence reported, however, the conviction rate between 2006 and 2011 was just 6.5 per cent of reported cases.

Every week two women are killed by a male partner, or former male partner - this represents one in three of all female homicides. One in five women will be a victim of sexual abuse, and one in twenty the victim of serious sexual abuse which includes rape, during their adult lives.

Duncan Lewis’s team of lawyers are skilled in dealing with sensitive cases such as domestic violence and can advise and provide legal assistance to resolve the problem. The courts are able to protect women from violent partners.
