A mother from Southampton has told a Channel 5 programme how she used to lock herself in her bedroom to avoid an onslaught of violence from her own children when they returned home from school.

Pauline Bubb, 47 said that her 11-year-old son and nine-year-old daughter regularly beat her, stabbed her with scissors and on one occasion tried to strangle her. Her daughter was the main perpetrator of the violence, but on occasions her son would also join in.

On one occasion he stabbed her in the stomach with scissors. Her daughter attacked her up to 30 times a day and once bit her face. Her daughter’s twin sister used to leave the room when the abuse started, she said.

Mrs Bubb turned to Channel 5 for help when she heard about their new programme My Violent Child, which was aired on Monday (02/03/15).

In an interview with The Mirror, she said she would begin to shake with terror as 3.30pm approached every day, when the children returned home from school.

Her son was eventually diagnosed with ADHD and his condition improved, but her daughter’s behaviour gradually grew worse. However, after child experts stepped in for the Channel 5 programme, her behaviour has improved, said Mrs Bubb – who added that her failure to set boundaries had caused her children’s violence as a result of their insecurity.

Child-parent abuse is a not uncommon but often hidden family issue. Research has shown that single mothers over the age of 40 with sons aged 15 to17 are most likely to be abused in the home, but single fathers can also be abused by their teenage sons.
