A mother who had her throat cut by her brutal ex-partner has been warned by a judge that she could face imprisonment if she does not write to him in jail and update him about their children.

The Mirror reports that 29-year-old Natalie Allman was savagely attacked by her ex-fiancé Jason Hughes, leaving her with a gaping wound in her throat and black eyes.

Hughes slashed her throat with an Army knife and battered her with dumbbells used for weightlifting in front of their twin sons, who were just two years’ old at the time they witnessed the attack.

After launching the brutal assault on her, he tried to suffocate her with a pillow. The attack on Ms Allman by Hughes went on for seven hours.

Hughes – formerly a part-time Territorial Army soldier – had felt spurned when Ms Allman broke off their engagement in 2012 and two months before their planned wedding over concerns about his alleged heavy drinking.

Hughes remained living at their home in Hereford – but went “berserk” after he discovered that his former fiancée was seeing another man.

Ms Allman said:

“He’d never been ¬aggressive before – just controlling and he drank too much.

“We’d been separated a few weeks, but he was still staying in the house until he found somewhere else.

“He found out that I was seeing someone else and the jealousy just sent him over the edge.”

During the assault, Hughes tied up Ms Allman to prevent her from escaping – and launched further attacks on her at 3am and 6am, refusing to call an ambulance after grievously wounding her. The knife he used missed a major artery “by millimetres” – and Ms Allman sustained five broken bones in her face and eight head wounds.

At 7am Ms Allman managed to dial 999 – police offices found her and her sons huddled in bed together, covered in blood.

Hughes was jailed at Worcester Crown Court in August 2012, after being convicted of malicious wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH).

He was sentenced to nine years in jail – but a court has now ruled Ms Allman must maintain contact with him at regular intervals during the year to update him on their twins, now aged five.

Hughes is allowed to send the children letters from HMP Oakwood where he is serving his sentence. The letters are sent to Ms Allman’s father’s address, so that Hughes does not know her new address.

If she fails to write to her former fiancé and send him images of their children, Ms Allman could be jailed for contempt of court.

Ms Allman now has a new partner and the couple have a baby boy together.

She says she was “shocked” when Hughes’s lawyer sent a letter to her advising her he was applying for a Residence and Contact Order under Section 8 of the Children Act of 1989.

“I got a ¬letter asking for six letters a year and phone calls on their birthdays and at Christmas,” she said.

“I never thought for a second that he would be granted any contact after what he did. I tried not to think about it.

“It seemed so unlikely anyone would take his side over mine.

“But he put the ¬application in and then just before Easter last year I got asked to go to court.”

Ms Allman says she had to pay £3,000 of her own money in legal costs to go to court over the application – Hughes’ legal fees were paid using Legal Aid.

Ms Allman also had to undergo cosmetic surgery after the attack on her by Hughes – at his court hearing, his lawyer said that Hughes had attacked her so brutally so that other men would not find her attractive.

Ms Allman added that she had been told that after Hughes’ release – which could as early as 2016 – the family would be ¬protected and alarms would be fitted in the house. There would also be a geographical ban on Hughes to prevent him visiting the family’s hometown.
