Blackburn Magistrates Court has heard how a man allegedly punched his pregnant girlfriend in the head and the side of her stomach, amid suspicions she might be seeing another man who could be the baby’s father.

On Boxing Day (26/12/13), Brendan Luke Webster, 22, of Clarence Street, Darwen in Lancashire pleaded guilty to assaulting his partner Beth Brindle and damaging her mobile phone.

On the day the incident occurred, Mr Webster had returned home after drinking and Ms Brindle had gone downstairs because she feared he was becoming angry.

The court heard that Ms Brindle was downstairs in their home watching a film on her laptop computer. Mr Webster followed her downstairs and inflicted three blows on her, two of which made contact.

He was suspicious about what she was watching on her laptop and also smashed up her mobile phone.

The court heard that the pregnancy had been confirmed when the couple were estranged from each other and Mr Webster had concerns he might not be the father of Ms Brindle’s baby.

It is alleged he told Ms Brindle he was going to “get that baby out of you” before aiming a punch at her head and then at her stomach, the third blow of which caught her on the side of the stomach and caused her to have a panic attack.

The court heard that the couple were exchanging angry messages online while in the same house – and Ms Brindle sent a message to a friend using a social networking site, saying Mr Webster was becoming angry and asking that they call the police.

Mr Webster accepts he pushed his partner back onto a bed, but denies punching her. He claims when he went downstairs Ms Brindle was using her mobile phone and he caught sight of a message from a man he considered a rival for her affections.

The case was adjourned pending further investigations into the evidence.
