Conservative MP Justine Greening has used a trip to Zambia to announce that Britain is to lead the way in ending child marriage across the globe.

Ms Greening – whose constituency is Putney, Roehampton and Southfields in southwest London – is also the government’s Secretary of State for International Development.

She was speaking at an Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme in Lusaka, Zambia.

The programme is funded by the British government and advises girls on issues such as marriage, pregnancy and money management.

In her speech, Ms Greening said that since becoming independent from Britain 50 years’ ago, Zambia had become known as a “model of democracy” in Africa.

However, she added that many of Zambia’s citizens – and especially girls and women – were still “locked out” of many of the opportunities Zambia’s economic and political development now offered.

“The top 10% of Zambians control over half of national income…the bottom
60% share less than 14%,” Ms Greening said.

“There are too many girls around the world who reach adolescence and find their future is already written,” she went on to say.

“Before their childhood is even over, they are married and having children themselves.”

It is estimated that as many as 14 million girls worldwide enter a forced marriage every year – with thousands of girls in the UK also at risk of being forced into marriage.

Ms Greening told the Adolescent Girls Empowerment Programme in Lusaka that the UK government was determined to end child marriages and forced marriages.

In July, Prime Minister David Cameron is also due to host the Girls’ Summit in London, which this year will start to put pressure on countries where forced marriages and female genital mutilation are practised. Some girls who enter forced marriages abroad are as young as eight years’ old.
