The Appeal Court has overturned a High Court judgment against a divorcee seeking more of her ex-husband’s fortune – meaning she will now be able to continue her case to win more of an estimated £11 million fortune.
The Evening Standard newspaper reports that when Julia Hammans, 55, married her husband Nicholas Hammans, 54 in 1983, she gave up her job as finance director of leading department store Dickens and Jones to become a housewife.
Mr Hammans works for PriceWaterhouseCoopers (PWC) and last year Mrs Hammans went to the High Court seeking £2.6m as a final lump sum payment before her ex-husband retires – claiming that she gave up her own successful career to be a homemaker.
Mr Hammans has been paying his former wife £150,000 every year since they divorced – Mrs Hammans also received the family home worth £1.75m in the divorce settlement.
However, a High Court judge said that Mr Hammans should only pay his ex-wife £400,000 as a final settlement before he retires – and added that Mrs Hammans should sell her home, which she claims is discriminatory.
Mr Hammans earned £800,000 in 2013, the Appeal Court was told.
The Appeal Court ruling in Mrs Hammans’ favour means that the case will be reheard.
