Sunjay joined Duncan Lewis in autumn 2009 as an in-house advocate, having previously been attached to a well-regarded west London criminal practice.
Sunjay is qualified as both a Barrister and Solicitor having been Called to the Bar in 2007 and Admitted to the Roll in 2008. As such he enjoys ‘All Proceedings Higher Rights of Audience’ and is amongst a handful of solicitors who are able to address all courts and tribunals throughout the jurisdiction. Sunjay is also qualified as a duty solicitor whereby he is accredited by the Law Society to perform valuable work as the first legal point of contact for vulnerable and unrepresented clients at the police station and Magistrates’ Court.
As a litigator Sunjay has had exposure to work across the gamut of the criminal law including murder, rape and complex fraud. Of note, he was part of the team which represented the first defendant in the largest counterfeit medicines conspiracy to be prosecuted in the UK to date and he was the junior case-holder on a high profile money laundering and political corruption matter emerging out of Nigeria. Sunjay has also maintained a strong common-law portfolio and has been active in the County Court and High Court with matters concerning (inter alia) debt recovery, injunctive relief and mercantile contractual disputes.
As an advocate Sunjay is exclusively briefed by Duncan Lewis colleagues - accepting instructions for Senior Court work commensurate with his grade and experience. Sunjay has a genuine commitment to publicly funded work and has expanded his own service provision to that end.
