Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, £7,500 in fines, after Stoke-on-Trent council takes nine people to court for environmental offences

Stoke-on-Trent City Council has prosecuted nine people for environmental offences, including fly-tipping, littering and failing to make sure waste is disposed of legally.

The council says that the prosecutions are the latest in its zero tolerance crackdown on environmental crime across the city.

The nine were ordered to pay at total of £7,500 in fines after being convicted at Stafford Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday, 14 September. The court ordered the worst offenders to pay more than £1,000 in fines.

Stoke-on-Trent’s Cabinet Member for greener city, development and leisure, Councillor Terry Follows, said:

“We are committed to keeping the streets, pavements and open spaces of Stoke-on-Trent litter free – and will continue to crack down and take action against anyone who thinks they can treat our city like a dumping ground.

“I want to make it completely clear that waste crime is not victimless – dealing with it costs the council thousands of pounds each year, which could be better spent on many of the other services we have to provide to residents.

“Fly-tipped waste also brings down the appearance of an area, can encourage further anti-social behaviour – and attract vermin, which poses a serious health risk to people living nearby.

“In the long term, environmental crime can also have an effect on people’s property prices – and make the city less attractive to potential investors and developers.

“The message is simple – we will not tolerate any environmental crimes and will carry out robust investigations and prosecutions against the perpetrators.”
