Tower Hamlets Council is taking part in a countrywide anti-fraud data matching exercise.

Tower Hamlets’ Corporate Anti-Fraud Team is responsible for investigating all allegations of fraud received by the council – and includes specialist investigators who deal with suspected tenancy fraud issues and Blue Badge irregularities.

The 2016 National Fraud Initiative (NFI) managed by the Cabinet Office ensures that all local authorities and some public organisations contribute their data for matching purposes, to prevent and detect fraud and errors.

The initiative aims to protect public funds and support investigations of fraud.

Data includes tenancy and Right-to-Buy records, payroll and pension details, housing benefit records, parking permits and Blue Badge records, personal budget records, funded care home records, the council’s creditor payments, insurance claimants, registered market traders and alcohol licence holders.

Tower Hamlets Council’s Cabinet Member for Resources, Councillor David Edgar, said:

“Our fraud team have a good track record of working with local and national agencies to stamp out fraud and protect the public purse. The NFI will further support our work in this area.”
