The Court of Appeal has increased the prison sentence of an 18-year-old man from Reading for the attempted murder of two teenage girls while he was on bail for the rape and sexual assault of two other teenage girls.
Callum Stroomer must serve at least 17 years, after The Solicitor General, Robert Buckland QC MP, referred the sentence to the Court of Appeal.
Stroomer was sentenced to a total of 17 years’ detention at Reading Crown Court, after originally being sentenced in October 2015.
The court heard that Stroomer had carried out the attacks because he was having difficulty coming to terms with his sexuality.
The Solicitor General personally presented the appeal case on Tuesday (02/02/16). After the hearing, Mr Buckland said:
“I referred the original sentence as I felt that it did not properly reflect the severity of the case.
“The offences included the vicious attempted killing of two girls in a violent knife attack, as well as serious rape and sexual assault in circumstances of blackmail.
“I hope this increased sentence gives some comfort to the victims and their families.”
