Sandwell Council in the West Midlands is urging the public to report any instances of hate crimes.

Sandwell Against Hate will launch on Monday 10 October at a special event in Oldbury at the start of National Hate Crime Awareness Week.

Sandwell Council, West Midlands Police, Rights and Equality Sandwell and Victim Support are among a number of organisations to have joined forces to take the campaign across the borough.

The key message of the campaign is, “Don’t be a victim of hate just because of who you are, what you look like, what you wear, what you believe or who you love. REPORT IT!”

The campaign will launch at a best practice forum on tackling hate crime at Sandwell Council House in Oldbury.

The event will focus on how to better support victims of hate crime and encourage reporting – and ask attendees to make a pledge on how they will help tackle it in their community.

Also planned for National Hate Crime Awareness Week in Sandwell are school visits to help young people recognise and report hate crime and explain what support is available, as well as a community roadshow.

Sandwell Council’s cabinet member for public health and protection, Councillor Preet Gill, said:

“Hate crimes must be recognised, recorded and dealt with wherever they take place.

“I want to thank the Safer Sandwell Hate Crime Partnership Group for organising these activities for National Hate Crime Awareness Week – this is just the start of our campaign.

“We need to get the message out there that hate crimes will not be tolerated in Sandwell – and that no matter what type of crime it is, we are here to help and give support.”

Sandwell Police’s Superintendent Richard Youds added:

“We want people to have the knowledge and confidence to report hate crimes – and to know their reports will be taken seriously by the police, council and other partners.

“It’s not just victims who can report hate crimes – we urge anyone who witnesses a hate crime to report it.

“Support is available for all those who are affected by these horrible incidents.”
