Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, Sandwell Council consults on new anti-social behaviour strategy

Sandwell Council in the West Midlands is consulting on a new strategy to tackle anti-social behaviour.

Local residents have until 9 September to have their say about a move to bring in a Public Space Protection Order (PSPO) in West Bromwich Central and Princes End, Tipton.

This would ban groups of three or more from gathering and engaging in activities such as swearing, dropping litter, spitting, causing criminal damage and using threatening behaviour to annoy or frighten others.

Those breaking the order could be handed a £100 fine – and, if they do not pay the fine, they face being taken to court, where magistrates could fine them up to £1,000.

PSPOs were brought in by the Anti-Social Behaviour, Crime and Policing Act 2014 to give councils extra powers to tackle problems affecting local communities.

Sandwell Council’s Cabinet Member for public health and protection, Councillor Preet Gill, said:

“We already use a variety of the tools the law gives us to clamp down on behaviour that causes decent, law-abiding families problems in their neighbourhoods – but anti-social behaviour is continuing in these two parts of the borough.

“PSPOs are a relatively new power that gives us extra options – we think they could be a real help to make life better for people in West Bromwich Central and Princes End.

”We are keen to find out what people think of the idea – and are urging them to take part in the consultation we have set up.”

Superintendent Richard Youds of Sandwell Police added:

“One of our local priorities here in Sandwell is to ensure that our communities are able to live, work and socialise in the borough, free from anti-social behaviour.

”Recent years have seen reductions in these types of incidents – and Public Space Protection Orders assist us being able to continue to address any issues in the areas they cover.”
