Duncan Lewis, Crime Solicitors, Powys offers road safety courses to motorcyclists and mature drivers

Powys County Council has announced a number of initiatives to help motorcyclists ride safely, thanks to funding from the Welsh government.

The council’s Road Safety Unit says the first initiative is called Ride On – a one-day motorcycle course designed to give motorcyclists an introduction to advanced motorcycling.

It consists of an informal theory session, followed by an assessment ride out, which is captured on the tutor’s bike-mounted camera.

The courses are open to people who live and work in Powys and take place on Sunday 14 May, Sunday 23 July and Sunday 15 October in Newtown – and on Saturday 23 September in Llandrindod Wells.

Another course available to motorcyclists is Biker Down – provided and delivered by the unit in partnership with Mid and West Wales Fire and Rescue Service, the three-hour course covers topics such as collision scene management, emergency first aid and helmet removal, and the science of being seen.

The course will take place on Thursday 27 April, Thursday 22 June, Thursday 10 August and Thursday 19 October in Llandrindod Wells – and on Thursday 18 May, Thursday 20 July, and Thursday 21 September in Newtown.

Additionally, the Road Safety Unit is able to take the Biker Down course to existing motorcycle clubs.

Finally, the unit is also making the Crash Card scheme available to any motorcyclist who uses the county’s roads.

The card contains the personal details of the motorcyclist and sits in the lining of their helmet – the card can be used by the emergency services should the motorcyclist ever be involved in a collision.

Powys County Council’s Head of Highways, Transport and Recycling, Nigel Brinn, said:

“With 3,400 miles of road, Powys has the largest road network in Wales and motorcyclists come far and wide to enjoy our rural roads.

“As one of the most vulnerable road users in Powys, our Road Safety Unit wants to reduce the number of motorcyclists involved in collisions – we hope these initiatives will help motorcyclists ride safer on our roads and minimise the risk of being involved in a collision.”

The council is also hosting informal workshops for mature car drivers in Powys, to enable them to brush up on their road knowledge. More information on courses is available at road.safety@powys.gov.uk.
