Tottenham MP David Lammy is to witness proceedings at Wood Green Crown Court in north London today (13/04/16), as part of the Ministry of Justice (MoJ) review into possible racial bias in the judicial system.

Mr Lammy will attend the court after MPs vowed to “leave no stone unturned” for a “root-and-branch” review into why black and ethnic minority defendants (BAME) receive more custodial sentences than white defendants.

A review into the figures was announced by the Prime Minister earlier in 2016 – and it will consider the treatment and outcomes for BAME defendants, to identify and help tackle potential bias or prejudice.

David Lammy said:

“I will leave no stone unturned for this root-and-branch review, which will scrutinise every stage of the criminal justice system.

“We know that guilty defendants from ethnic minority backgrounds are more likely to face prison sentences at the end of court cases – it’s my job to find out why.

“Seeing justice work at first hand will be a key part of that – and I look forward to observing the court’s proceedings as part of this visit.”

Figures show that, whereas those from BAME backgrounds make up 14% of the population in England and Wales, a disproportionate amount of Crown Court defendants (24%) are from black and ethnic minority backgrounds.
