Trafford Council is supporting a national anti-child abuse campaign, in conjunction with the Trafford Safeguarding Children Board.

The Together we can Tackle Child Abuse campaign aims to highlight the part that everyone has to play in protecting children and young people from abuse and neglect.

An estimated 400,000 children in England received support in 2014-2015 because someone noticed they needed help and reported it, the council says.

Trafford Council's Executive Member for Children's Services, Michael Hyman, said, however, that one-third of people who suspect child abuse or neglect do nothing – many because they are worried that their suspicions might be wrong.

Mr Hyman said: “The council is committed to protecting all local children and young people, so they can develop to achieve their individual potential in adulthood.

“Suffering from child abuse or neglect seriously impacts on them, their personality, confidence and development.

“The public are often in the best position to recognise an issue in their local area – people mustn't be afraid of reporting concerns or suspicions they have to us. They won't be identified personally – but their information, together with details gathered from elsewhere, will provide our trained social workers with the necessary information they need to investigate it further.

“Nobody wants to see a child or young person's life destroyed at the hands of others. We appreciate reporting a suspicion is difficult – often people feel they may be overreacting or misreading a situation – but they must remember. it is always better to be safe than sorry.”

The government campaign is being supported by councils across the country, with members of the public being encouraged to report any suspicions they might have that a child is being abused to the local authority’s children’s services department, the police, or the NSPCC.
