Kingston Council and Achieving for Children (AfC) are urging residents of the borough to report any suspicions they might have about child abuse.
The move is in support of the Department for Education's (DfE) campaign to help tackle child abuse, with partners across Kingston working together through Kingston Local Safeguarding Children Board (LSCB).
The initiative to root out child abuse in the area involves schools, the police, and the health and the voluntary sector.
The LSCB’s role provides an overview of how effectively children are safeguarded and identifies improvements where necessary – the LSCB is an independent body which can oversee the roles of all organisations working with children and families.
Kingston Council’s Cabinet Member with responsibility for Looked after Children, Councillor Eric Humphrey, said:
“All children in our borough have a right to be safe and should be protected from all forms of abuse and neglect.
“A recent survey has revealed that a third of people who suspect child abuse do nothing, with many not acting on their suspicions because they’re worried about being wrong.
“You don’t have to be absolutely certain about your suspicions – if you have a feeling that something’s not right, contact the Achieving for Children's Single Point of Access Team,” he added.
