Caution for Manchester mother who left her children “home alone” without food or heating to go on winter holiday (10 August 2015)

A mother who left her two young children alone at home without food, gas or heating has been spared court action and has been given a caution.
Manchester Evening News reports that the children were found in an “unkempt” condition in the house. She left her children at home in Salford, Greater Manchester in January this year to go on holiday for three weeks.
She was arrested on suspicion of child neglect at Heathrow Airport on her return and the children – one aged below ten – were placed initially with foster parents. It is reported they continued to attend school in their mother’s absence.
Their mother had returned from her holiday early in February after she had been alerted that the police and children’s services officers were investigating why the children had been left alone in the house.
Greater Manchester Police (GMP) say the woman will not face court action and has been issued with a caution.
At the time the woman was arrested, GMP issued a statement:
“A woman has been arrested on suspicion of child neglect.
“The female was arrested having re-entered the country in February 2015. The female has been bailed for further enquiries.
“Two children are now in the care of the local authority. It is believed that the female left the UK in mid January 2015.”
Although both children were placed in foster care, it is reported that they have now been returned to their mother. A spokeswoman for the council said:
“We are continuing to work with the family.”
