Domestic violence can be difficult to identify, especially for the person experiencing it. People often assume that domestic violence has to be physical violence, but the reality is that domestic abuse is much more of an appropriate term. Domestic abuse is a pattern of behaviour characterised by the exercise of control by one person over another within the context of an intimate or family relationship. This type of control can come in many forms and can be emotional, financial and sexual in nature.

The misconception that domestic abuse is only prominent in heterosexual relationships, with a man exercising control over a woman- can leave other vulnerable victims, outside this scope, thinking they have nowhere to turn for help.

Men experience domestic abuse from women in heterosexual relationships, as well as in gay or bisexual relationships. Equally, women can suffer at the hands of other women in lesbian or bisexual relationships.

For a man or a member of the LGBTQ community the problems associated with domestic abuse can be complex. The abuse received may be a threat or for a person’s gender identity to be disclosed to their workplace or family. There may also be a belief that calling the police or going to the doctor for help will be met with hostility, discrimination, ‘phobia’, ridicule or further abuse.
