The Parole Board Review is a risk assessment to ensure offenders can safely be released from prison back into the community. In the case of those serving life sentences – “lifers“ – the Parole Board must decide if the risk to others is “no more than minimal”.
Under the Criminal Justice Act 2003, IPP sentences are classed as a “serious specified offence” – usually involving convictions for violent crime or sexual offences. Because of the nature of the offences, parole applications have to be considered carefully – and it is vital to be represented adequately to have the best chance of a fair review for parole.
Life sentences are handed out for the most serious crimes – and again, although lifers are eligible for a Parole Board Review, it is essential to be professionally represented at the hearing, so that a fair case for parole can be made on an offender’s behalf.
