Newark and Sherwood District Council in Nottinghamshire has been awarded nearly £1 million to kick start a regeneration scheme, including new housing development.
The funding has been awarded through the national Estate Regeneration Fund and council officers have been working with counterparts at the Department of Local Communities to secure almost £1m of support.
The funding will be used to undertake detailed appraisals and technical studies of two areas – the Yorke Drive state and Lincoln Road Playing Fields – to identify the best approach for sustainable regeneration and housing growth. The local community will be involved in taking matters forward, said the council.
Completion of the Bridge Ward Neighbourhood Study by the council and partners in 2012 identified the potential of new housing on Lincoln Road Playing Fields, accompanied by a regeneration programme for the neighbouring Yorke Drive Estate.
District Council leader Councillor Roger Blaney said:
"This is excellent news – we can now make progress on the work we need to do to put us in a strong position to enable delivery of housing growth and regeneration in one of the council's most deprived wards.”
