Slough Borough Council has announced that a mobile breast screening unit has been launched in Slough with Frimley Health NHS Foundation Trust.

The unit is located at Cippenham Community Centre in Slough – and over the next two years, all eligible women in Slough will be invited to attend essential, free routine screening to help diagnose breast cancer earlier.

Screening involves the use of a specialist X-ray called a mammogram, which checks breast tissue for abnormalities. The technology can detect cancers when they are too small to see or feel.

Women aged between 50 and 70 who are registered with a local GP are automatically invited for breast cancer screening every three years, with the aim of detecting breast cancer as early as possible to improve chances of treating it successfully.

Women may also be eligible for screening before the age of 50 if they have a family history of breast cancer (male or female) or ovarian cancer – more information is available from a GP.

Cabinet Member for health, Councillor Sabia Hussain, said:

“Breast cancer is the most common type of cancer in the UK and affects one in eight women during their lives, so coming along for a mammogram is very important.

“There's a good chance of recovery if breast cancer is detected in its early stages, but sadly the uptake of breast screening in Slough is currently low.

“This is why we’re encouraging local women to accept their invitation for free breast screening – it will only take a few minutes out of your day, but could end up saving your life.”

Director of the East Berkshire Breast Screening Programme, Dr Margaret Moreland, added:

“Breast cancers found by screening are generally at an early stage – current evidence suggests that breast screening saves approximately 1,300 lives a year in the UK from breast cancer.

“We would encourage all women who are invited for screening to come to our new mobile breast screening site at the Cippenham Community Centre.”

The council said that staff at the mobile breast screening unit in Cippenham are all female.

The “Helping you decide” leaflet has more information on the risks and benefits of breast screening – the leaflet is produced by the UK government and is available in several different languages.
