Halton Borough Council in Cheshire has said that more than 1,300 local people engaged with Mental Health Awareness Week, held earlier in May.

Formerly a village, Halton is now an area of the town of Runcorn – the council and its partners organised a range of events to promote Mental Health Awareness Week and raise awareness of mental health issues generally.

Local support services were on hand at the event to support the Health Improvement Team.

The team from Halton Borough Council’s Health Improvement and Runcorn Shopping Centre were supported by Citizen’s Advice Halton, Venus Charity, Anita Morris and Murray the Owl from Hackback, Mental Health Outreach team, Kooth, CAMHs, Child Bereavement, IAPT, Papyrus, Amparo and SEND Partnership.

In support of Mental Health Awareness Week, students and teachers on the counselling degree course at Riverside College also organised Community Listening events in Runcorn and Widnes.

Community Listening involves taking chairs out into the community and inviting members of the public to just sit and talk about anything they choose.

Listeners do not give advice or make judgements, but just listen with empathy. Listeners may also signpost people to mental health services if there is a need.

Halton’s Mayor at the time of the events, Councillor Ged Philbin, said:

“It was great to see so many people getting into the spirit of the event – and we really hope it has had a positive effect on people’s lives here in Halton.”
